In the electrical engineering field, the development of new and better technologies is always a priority. As the demand for reliable protection against voltage aberrations increase, it is necessary to research and develop ways to provide safe and efficient protection. One of these ways is with a Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT). GDTs are electrical protective devices, designed to limit transient overvoltages such as lightning surges, switching surge or inductive loads. The GDT works by providing a fast, reliable, and effective, discharge of electricity in the event of an overcurrent situation.The gas discharge tube arrester consists of two main parts, the anode and the cathode. The cathode is a closed metal tube, with one or more connections inside. The anode is an outer metal sleeve, which surrounds the cathode, with a gap between the two. The gap acts as the insulation between the two. When an electrical surge occurs, the cathode will emit electrons, creating a spark in the gap. This spark will cause a rise in the voltage inside the tube. When this voltage is higher than a critical value, a gas or arc is released through the gap, thus discharging the electrical energy. GDTs work in conjunction with the other electrical protective devices in order to provide maximum protection against transient overvoltages. It also provides some level of protection against interference signals. GDTs are often used in high altitude areas, where protection against lightning strikes is necessary. They are also commonly used in heavy-duty industrial environments, as they are capable of maintaining the electric distance between equipment and the ground.GDTs are often used in a variety of applications, including power transmission lines, substations, and consumer electrical installations. In power plants, GDTs are used to protect against lightning strikes, as well as to protect vital equipment. In consumer electrical installations, they are used to protect against high voltage spikes associated with machines such as washing machines and air conditioners.The GDT is connected across the load and hence any high voltage transient passing through the load flows through the GDT. If the magnitude of the overvoltage is greater than the GDT\'s breakdown voltage, the ions contained in the gap between the electrodes will collide violently with the gas molecules, generating a dielectric breakdown of the gap. This breakdown causes a spark over the gap, resulting in a sudden and very large current flowing through the GDT, discharging the overvoltage, limiting its magnitude to a safe level.In order for the GDT to work properly, its breakdown voltage should not exceed the rated voltage of the equipment being protected. Many different types of GDTs are available to suit different applications, including AC and DC GDTs, having different breakdown voltages and current-limiting abilities. The gap size can be adjusted to achieve the required breakdown voltage or current-limiting capability.
