Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

Gas discharge tube arresters (GDTs) are an important type of surge protection device designed to protect critical electrical equipment from transient voltage phenomena like lightning strikes and power supply faults. GDTs are solid state devices that employ a sealed trigger gas in order to reduce the electrical energy through the device by dissipating the energy via a spark gap mechanism. GDTs were first developed in the 1950s and are now a widely used piece of safety equipment in numerous industrial and domestic applications. The main function of a GDT is to limit or prevent excessively high voltage from damaging other electrical components. When the voltage reaching the GDT passes a certain threshold, an electric arc is triggered, which effectively diverts the current into the ground. The trigger voltage of a GDT is primarily dependant on the gas filling the device. GDTs are generally divided into two categories based on their application field, namely, impulse type GDTs and DC high-speed voltage transient type GDTs.

Impulse Type Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

Impulse type GDTs are mainly used for the protection of power lines from large amplitude lightning impulse induced surge voltages. These devices are commonly installed in power transmission and distribution networks in order to divert the energy from lightning strikes away from critical electrical equipment. Impulse type GDTs are designed to handle and prevent impulse voltages of up to 100kV in magnitude. Generally, impulse type GDTs are made from a zinc oxide pellet housed within a sealed glass or ceramic tube. Coaxial lines are connected onto the zinc oxide pellet in order to transfer the electrical energy out of the tube. The pressure of the gas within the GDT is designed to be balanced in order to trigger the device at the appropriate voltage threshold. The main working principle involves a charged gas filling the device which extinguishes the arc as soon as the voltage potential reaches the threshold of the device. This prevents excessive currents from flowing through other electrical equipment and diverts the energy into the ground.

DC High-Speed Voltage Transient Type Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

DC high-speed voltage transient type GDTs are mainly used for the protection of vulnerable electronic equipment in power systems prone to power disturbances in the form of voltage sags, voltage swells and other DC-related issues. These GDTs are designed to handle DC transients of up to 20kV in amplitude. DC high-speed voltage transient type GDTs are designed with a shorter trigger voltage and shorter spark gap than impulse type GDTs. These devices are generally made from two electrodes that are separated by the gas within the device. When the voltage reaches the threshold, the gas within the GDT ionizes and causes a spark gap that is capable of diverting the energy away from the other components. The working principle of a DC high-speed voltage transient type GDT is similar to the working principle of an impulse type GDT. The main difference lies in the speed of the device. The spark gap of the DC GDT must be able to respond extremely quickly in order to protect the other equipment from the event.
