Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are positive temperature coefficient voltage-sensitive real-time protection components. They are installed in the positive and negative power lines of the transformer and connected in series. In normal operation, the arrester is non-conductive. When an abnormal high voltage occurs, a transient voltage that exceeds the normal operating voltage, a conductive path is formed within the arrester, and the electrical energy is conducted through the arrester. Thus, the transformer is protected from abnormal high voltage. In this way, the over-current protection function of the arrester works. Currently, due to the use of special materials with excellent properties, GDTs can be used as a cost-effective overvoltage protection solution in many applications, such as power lines, communications systems, and electronic circuits.
