A Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) is a device that protects electrical circuitry from disruptive electrical phenomena such as overvoltages. This protection is usually provided by containing a gas within an envelope which is subjected to a high electric field when a transient voltage appears on the protected electrical circuit. When the electric field reaches a certain threshold, the gas inside the envelope ionizes and permits current to flow until the transient voltage dissipates, enabling the device to clip the peaks of the disruptive transient voltage.
The 2027-60-C form of GDT is engineered to provide superior surge protection to electrical circuits. The device is constructed with a ceramic-type tube surrounded by an air core and utilizes a specially formulated mixture of gases to provide the best combination of arc quenching performance and long-term reliability. The 2027-60-C is also designed to be resistant to thermal shock, vibration, and electrical noise, making it suitable for harsh industrial conditions.

In the event of an extremely large transient, the protective device can be arranged to operate in series with other protective components, such as fuses or circuit breakers, to provide additional protection.
The primary components of the 2027-60-C are two identical cylindrical electrodes with a gap between them. The gap is filled with non-conductive insulation and argon gas at a pressure of 50 atmospheres. A foamed silica filler is incorporated within the insulation to help in quenching any arcs that may form between the electrodes.
The operation of the 2027-60-C can be understood by analyzing what happens when a voltage transient, such as a lightning surge or power system switching transient, appears on a protected circuit. As a result of the high electric field that builds up between the electrodes of the GDT, a spark arc occurs when the electric field reaches the breakdown voltage of the gas in the gap. Upon the sparking of the arc, a large current, known as the rupture current, is created between the electrodes and flows through the internal resistive element of the GDT, resulting in the dissipation of the transient energy. At this point, the spark arc quenches and the device resumes its normal state.
In order to ensure optimal performance, the 2027-60-C should be securely mounted to a heatsink or other device that is capable of dissipating the heat generated by the GDT during operation. Additionally, it is recommended that the GDT be connected to its ground lead before connecting it to the protected circuit. Proper grounding of the GDT is essential as it creates a path for the transient current to flow, thereby ensuring that the surge energy is safely dissipated.
The 2027-60-C form of GDT is ideal for providing reliable surge protection to electrical circuits exposed to severe transient voltages.
