Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) including Class C, Class C+, Type II and Type III Arresters are used to protect valuable electrical equipment against damaging lightning and switching surges that travel along the power line. GDTs, fused devices composed of zinc oxide and other materials, are designed to protect against these damaging surges and have been used for over 100 years as part of overall lightning protection systems.

A GDT is composed of three distinct parts: an anode, a cathode, and a spark gap. The anode and cathode occupy opposite ends of the tube while the spark gap is positioned between them. When an electrical overload is applied at the anode and cathode, the spark gap is forced open, allowing the arc to conduct current, thus allowing the GDT to act as an overflow current switch (Rudiger-Alt Koronar 1962).

The most common type of GDT is the Class C arrester. This type of arrester made of polymeric material and filled with metal oxide is designed to protect against an 8/20 μs high-voltage impulse.
