Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are reliable devices designed to protect electrical systems from damage caused by lightning, voltage surges, or changes in electric current. GDTs are made up of two sections, with the first acting as an insulation barrier to reduce the amount of voltage that reaches the second section. The second section contains one or more tubes filled with a gas that engages under abnormal voltage conditions and conducts current away from electrical systems. This limits the rate of energy transfer and reduces or eliminates the chance of electrical equipment being damaged. 2035-60-SM (also referred to as 2035-60 SM) is the most common type of GDT, and its application field is wide. It is suitable for a wide variety of electrical systems, including domestic electrical systems, telecommunications networks, railway systems, power station systems, overhead and underground power transmission lines, and more. It is particularly effective in protecting against high energy lightning strikes, voltage transients due to nearby system faults, as well as voltage transients due to switching operations in power systems.
The 2035-60-SM GDT works on an AC system and its working principle is based on the gas filled tube principle. There are two types of tubes inside the device, a spark gap tube and an over-voltage tube. The spark gap tube is composed of two electrodes which open and close at a preset level. When the voltage level rises beyond the preset value, the electrodes open and a current is conducted away from the system. The over-voltage tube is able to conduct larger amounts of current and offers increased protection against more intense strikes or surges.
In addition to the spark gap and over-voltage tubes, the 2035-60-SM also contains a voltage detector/protector. This is used to trigger the activation of the spark gap tube when the voltage level rises beyond a preset point. It is also used to maintain a safe working voltage level by triggering the spark gap tube when the voltage exceeds the given safety level. In this way, the device continues to protect the electrical system from voltage overloads.
