Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are a form of electrical protection device which protect electrical and electronic components against transient over-voltage which are induced by lightning and other over-voltages of atmospheric origin. GDTs have the ability to withstand very large voltages and have the capability to limit the peak current flowing through the protected circuit.
GDT arresters typically comprise a zinc oxide element, which is the base part of the arrester, along with a metal oxide varistor (MOV), which provides the electrical control and monitoring functions. The zinc oxide element helps to prevent electric current from passing through the MOV which is responsible for limiting the current flow.
2036-20-SMLF application field and working principle can be described as below. The 2036-20-SMLF is a Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) arrester with a very comprehensive operating principle. The arrestor consisting of anode and cathode is connected in parallel with the protected electrical circuit and has a maximum operating voltage of 20kV. The arrestor is designed to shunts a pulse of current produced by lightning or other transient phenomena, to prevent the current from flowing through the electrical circuit.
The working principle of the 2036-20-SMLF is based on the concept of a “short to ground”. When an overvoltage phenomenon is detected, the anode and cathode of the arrestor will “short” or quickly redirect the current away from the protected electrical circuit. In this mode the current is diverted to the ground through the arrestor, thus maintaining the protected circuit safe from transient over-voltages.
In addition to being able to function as short-to-ground devices, the 2036-20-SMLF also has the ability to provide protective over-voltage effects. This feature helps to protect against transient phenomenon which occur with a large voltage magnitude and high peak currents. Furthermore, the arrestor will activate its protective over-voltage mechanism when the magnitude of the incoming pulse of voltage exceeds a given threshold. The protective mechanism quickly shunts the current away from the circuit to be protected, thus limiting the impact of the transient phenomenon.
