The GDT element of the 2054-47-SM-RPLF consists of two electrodes with an intermediate gas gap. The gas gap is filled with a noble gas, usually neon or krypton, which is activated when a certain level of overvoltage is applied. As the voltage builds, electrons are ejected from the cathode. As they approach the anode, they collide with and ionize neutral gas atoms. This creates a plasma of free-moving electrons that is accelerated by the overvoltage until it strikes and continuously conducts through the lighter anode-cathode gap. This results in a rapid discharge of the surge current.
The MO Varistor element, on the other hand, acts as a nonlinear resistor. It is composed of a granular material with a very low resistivity that is placed between two electrodes.
