The 2063-47-ALF arrester is a GDT developed to provide long lasting, reliable protection against lightning strikes and transients on low-voltage networks. At the core of the 2063-47-ALF\'s surge protection is the Gas Discharge Tube (GDT). This component works by utilizing a gas mixture filled electric tube device that provides overvoltage protection. Whenever overvoltage occurs on a protected line, the GDT will first begin to conduct current, limiting the voltage across the GDT. Once the current reaches a high enough value, known as the breakover value, a spark will form within the GDT and provide further voltage protection by greatly reducing the voltage across the GDT. This component also enables the arrester to “reset” and return to its original state after the overvoltage incident has passed.
In addition to the GDT, the 2063-47-ALF arrester utilizes parallel connected metal oxide varistors (MOVs). The MOVs are arranged in parallel to reduce the amount of energy discharged by the GDT and act as a secondary junction in case of overvoltage. MOVs work by reducing the voltage across its terminals to a point where the GDT would not turn on. This allows the GDT to reset quickly, reacting in microseconds after a surge, and protect the system from damaging sustained voltages.
Finally, the 2063-47-ALF GDT arrester is protected by a highly visible red enclosure designed for durability and weather-resistance. This enclosure not only serves to protect the arrester from environmental hazards but also to clearly denote its protective purpose to personnel and personnel equipment. The enclosure is constructed from polyethylene hard plastic featuring a patented two-piece design which does not require any special tools for service.
