Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) play a vital role in the protection of electrical systems from overvoltages due to lightning or other causes. The 2093-200-SM-RPLF is one of the most commonly used GDT arresters in the market. They are most commonly used for Transformer and Control Panels, Motor Control Centers, Service Entrance Panels, Utility Line Extensions and Vacuum Switches.The working principle of the 2093-200-SM-RPLF GDT is based on a multi-layered construction. A positive Arc interrupting pellet is placed at the center of the GDT. This pellet is made from a material called Zinc Oxide (ZnO). The ZnO material is very high resistivity and re-arcing is negated when positive current travels from cathode to anode.When the GDT is placed in a circuit, the electric current will travel through the ZnO pellet and will be discharged in a controlled manner when there is an unwanted overvoltage or short-circuit.To protect the GDT from overvoltage, a combination of Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) and Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are used. MOVs, or Metal Oxide Varistors, are designed to control the electric field within the GDT and can respond quickly to overvoltage shocks. MOVs are used to limit the forward and reverse voltages applied to the GDT. Whenever the MOVs detect an overvoltage, they act as a conductor, allowing the electric current to “short” and bypass the GDT.GDTs also feature a built-in arc interrupter. The arc interrupter is designed to extinguish the arc caused by the overvoltage by breaking the electric current circuit. This arc interrupter is made up of two components; the arc quenching pellet at the center of the GDT and the screen modules wrapped around the outside of the GDT. During an overvoltage event, the arc quenching pellet will expand and create a gas cloud that will extinguish the arc.The 2093-200-SM-RPLF GDT is also equipped with a series of ion exchange plates. These plates are designed to reduce transients and also increase the GDT’s epsilon (dielectric strength) rating. High epsilon ratings enable the GDT to handle temperatures and pressure changes without compromising its performance.
