Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTA) are high voltage surge protection devices used to protect electrical systems and other valuable equipment from hazardous levels of electrical transients. The basic principle of GDTAs is to provide a low-impedance path to ground in the event of a transient voltage surge. This path allows the surge current to be diverted away from sensitive equipment before it can cause any catastrophic damage.The GDTAs are typically composed of three primary components: a conductive metal shell, a conductive ceramic insulator and a gas-filled discharge tube. The shell acts as an outer layer for the arrester, providing it with some mechanical strength and electrical insulation. The ceramic insulator provides electrical insulation between the outer shell and the inner tube. And the gas-filled discharge tube is the actual arrester that short-circuits the transient voltage spike, causing it to be diverted away from the electrical system.When the rated voltage of the system is exceeded, the gas-filled discharge tube is subject to an electric field that is strong enough to ionize the gas and produce a spark or arc. This spark or arc will then divert the current surge away from the system. This process is often referred to as a “breakdown”, and the device is effective until the gap in the discharge tube is filled with ions, or the breakdown occurs.The design of the discharge tube is such that the voltage level at which the breakdown occurs is higher than the rated voltage of the system. This is what protects the electronics from a surge beyond its rated voltage. However, it is important to keep in mind that this difference between the rated voltage and the breakdown voltage of the GDTAs is limited.In cases where the electrical surge is too large, the discharge tube will be unable to divert the surge away from the system, and the surge voltage can rise above the breakdown voltage of the GDTA and will still be able to damage the system. For this reason, it is important to ensure that the rating of the GDTAs is appropriate for the expected surge levels.GDTA’s have a wide range of applications in a variety of industrial settings, including distribution systems, telecommunications, power supplies, and other areas where electrical surges can be expected.
