Pushbutton Switches

Pushbutton switches are common types of switches used in many applications. They are found in almost all kinds of electrical and electronic equipment and are used in many situations where other control switch types are not suitable.

The working principle of a pushbutton switch is relatively simple. When a latching or momentary switch is pressed on, an electrical current flows from the switch and into a contact, thus making a connection. When the switch is released, the electrical current stops and the connection is broken. Momentary pushbutton switches will remain open until the button is pressed again and the connection is restored.

Latching pushbutton switches work differently. Once the switch is pressed and the connections are made, the electrical contacts are "locked" in the on position. When the button is pressed again, the connection is broken and the contacts are "unlatched" from the on position. The contacts remain unlatched until the switch is pressed again, at which point the connection is made and the contacts are "locked" in the on position again.

The electrical characteristics and operation of a pushbutton switch will depend on the design and type of switch used. Pushbutton switches can be single-pole/single-throw (SPST), single-pole/double-throw (SPDT), double-pole/single-throw (DPST), or double-pole/double-throw (DPDT). The choice of the most appropriate switch will depend on the application and the specific requirements of the system.
