Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) can have a detrimental effect on the performance of electronic and electrical systems. From mobile phones to microprocessors to spacecrafts, the electromagnetic energy emitted by and passing through these systems can create communication and performance issues when transmitted directly into the environment. The two main applications for RFI and EMI shielded and absorptive materials are in personal protective equipment (PPE) and electronic components. PPE pertains to all clothes worn to protect against hazards within the environment, and this type of shielding is used in general workplaces as well as medical, industrial, and military settings. Electronic components can also benefit from RFI and EMI treated materials, as the shielding can limit interference from external environment variables such as temperature and humidity; thus, allowing the component to perform to its maximum capabilities without being affected by external environmental factors.
In addition, these materials can also be used to reduce the amount of reflection and refraction caused by an electrical current or signal. This can be especially useful for antenna systems, as waves must be able to transmit and receive signals without interference. By providing radio waves with an uninterrupted pathway, RFI and EMI Shielding and Absorbing Materials can significantly improve the performance of antenna systems.
These materials are also used in aerospace, automotive, and military applications. For example, hoses used in fuel system design must be shielded to protect the fuel from static buildup. The shielding also prevents potential fuel leaks, as the static gathered on the hoses can be eliminated. Additionally, automotive wiring harnesses must be protected from the EMI generated by the car’s engine, preventing any unwanted interference from affecting the performance of the vehicle.
