Cable assemblies have been used in various applications for decades. Primarily they are utilised to link hardware on opposite sides of an enclosure or room, allowing electric current to pass from one end of the conduit to the other. In many ways, they offer a secure and safe connection between the two distinct components.
More typically, these cables are used in industries such as manufacturing and telecommunications, to connect disparate hardware throughout the building or facility. The majority of companies find them to be beneficial due to their connection reliability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility.
In order to be successful, cable assemblies must assemble many components that make up the assembly. The only two components that can be considered universal in a vast majority of cable assemblies are the cable and the connector, however there can be additional components that may be crucial into the make-up of a plug and play assembly.
The first element that must be determined is the connector. A connector is employed at either end of the cable assembly to translate the electrical current from the cable and form a secure attachment, depending on the application. Most connectors employ the use of pins, contacts, and sockets that are incorporated into the connection system.
To ensure the longevity of the cable assembly, certain materials used in the fabrication of the cable and connector assemblies strongly influence the performance of the assembly. Connectors may typically be produced from metals such as brass, copper and aluminum. Any contact surfaces are commonly plated in order to ensure that electrical contacts remain secure over time. Additionally, insulation materials such as epoxy resin are poured over the wire prior to insertion into the connector and secured by means of heat shrink tubing or a Waga type strain relief.
One of the most critical aspects of any cable is the material used in its construction. Standard materials used in fabrication are copper and plastic. Copper is used as a conductor for the electric current, whereas plastic is utilised for insulation. However, the plastic used may vary based upon the application of the cable assembly; “overmolding” may be utilized, for example, to provide additional strain relief and environmental protection.
Cable assemblies are most commonly used in IT environments and consumer electronics, as the cable assembly offers a secure and affordable means of connecting disparate hardware within a network. However, they can also be found in instances such as medical equipment where the degree of secure connection strength is paramount.
Cable assemblies provide flexibility when it comes to the environment in which they are used. Iterations as small as a couple of inches in length up to extremely long lengths of many feet, depending on the application, can be used in any environment. For this reason, they are ideal for use in many applications where a degree of flexibility is required.
Cable assemblies are discovered in uses such as industrial machines, consumer electronics, robotics, aerospace, and health care equipment. Typically they are employed as means to connect hardware, transfer electrical current from a controller to an actuator, or both. They are also used to control the motion of industrial machines, control the flow of liquid or gas in health care equipment, and provide support in robotics applications.
The versatility, durability, and reliability of cable assemblies allows them to be used effectively in controllers in any industry where control is required. Through the combination of appropriate materials, specific cable assembly configurations, and well-designed circuits, a secure connection is guaranteed that is capable of maintaining dependable, long lasting performance over time.
