23729-1 is an international standard that serves as an outline for the application field and working principle of the electro magnetic compatibility (EMC) related technology and equipment. It is pertinent to the application, design, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment in electromechanical environments. This part of the standard is concerned with electrical and electronic equipment and their connection to the surrounding environment.
It is beneficial to know that the standard includes general background and principles, test methods and measurements, and EMC product requirements related to electromagnetic compatibility of equipment and systems. It covers both conducted and radiated emissions and susceptibility. This standard applies to both single or multiple interconnected objects in an electromagnetic environment.
EMC is a term used to describe the difficulty of making different electronic systems and equipment work successfully in the same electromagnetic environment. With the advancement of electronics, all sorts of electronic and electrical circuit design and technology are available today, each capable of creating its own electromagnetic field. As technology evolves, these fields conflict with each other, leading to potential radio frequency (RF) interference and signal losses between various systems.
Under 23729-1, EMC is essentially a process of ensuring that such electromagnetic interference does not affect the performance of the equipment. If this interference clashes with the circuit, the signal or the function of the device may be hampered severely. Hence, following this standard helps to ensure that all devices operate flawlessly, in spite of their electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problem.
In order to achieve this goal, modern EMC designs must include the following: proper shielding techniques, ground designs and circuit architectures. This requires the optimization of the entire system, including the circuits, components, and layout of the software application.
EMC is an umbrella term for a number of different tests that can be used to test the inherent or expected compatibility of a product under various electromagnetic conditions. Under the standard, the tests are broken into two categories: radiated emissions and conducted emissions.
The radiated emissions test measures any kind of electromagnetic radiation that may be present in the environment. This includes radio, television and radar signals. The conducted emissions tests are used to measure any kind of high frequency signals that are generated directly from the device itself. This could be power lines, telephone lines, video lines, etc.
The standard also provides general principles which can be used to properly apply the EMC requirements. These include the understanding of the electrical environment, EMC levels, evaluation of EMC configuration and practical EMC measurement techniques. It also covers topics such as cable shielding and grounding, noise immunity and EMC compliance.
In today’s world, it is important to recognize that electromagnetic compatibility is essential for the proper functioning of electronic devices and circuits. It is important that all devices comply with the standards established under 23729-1 for proper safety and operation of equipment and systems. Additionally, following this standard also ensures that any older equipment is also capable of performing well with newer products.
