Temperature Sensors – NTC Thermistors are widely used in a number of application fields and are relatively simple devices that measure the temperature of an object, substance, or system. The general working principle depends on the temperature coefficient of the element material. When the material is exposed to a temperature, the resistance of the material changes with the temperature, and the resistance is measured with a Wheatstone bridge or other method. With a known temperature coefficient, the temperature can be accurately calculated.
The term “thermistor” is actually an acronym which stands for “thermal resistor.” A thermistor is a type of resistor which is composed by a type of ceramic material that exhibits a change in its electrical resistance with temperature. This type of temperature sensor is based on the fact that the resistance of certain semiconductor materials changes rapidly with temperature. Its main characteristic is its small size compared to other materials, such as thermocouples, which measure temperature.
The thermistor is constructed from two types of semiconductor materials: n-type semiconductors, which have a negative temperature coefficient; and p-type semiconductors, which have a positive temperature coefficient. A thermistor with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) is the most common, and is often used in the 2381 641 66272 application field.
NTC thermistors are suitable for measuring temperatures ranging from -55°C to +200°C. NTC’s are selected for their temperature coefficient of resistance, which is typically measurement range of -25°C to +125°C. As the temperature increases, the resistance decreases.
