The 24LC256T-I/MS is a family of I2C Serial EEPROMs that is designed to store 256Kbits of data. It provides an memory solution for applications requiring a reliable non-volatile memory for data storage and retrieval. This device is ideal for storing small amounts of data such as configuration registers, setup parameters, etc.

Working Principle

The 24LC256T-I/MS consists of two main blocks: the memory core and the control logic. The memory core is programmed as an array of 256Kbit, associated with a two-wire serial interface and two address inputs to locate the page, sector or byte desired. The control logic contains address decode and data transfer circuitry.

The 24LC256T-I/MS is controlled through the two-pin serial interface that supports the I2C protocol. Data transfer is initiated by a master device (hereafter referred to as master) which sends start and stop bits followed by a 7-bit or 10-bit logical address and read/write bit. The 24LC256T-I/MS receives the address information and responds with an acknowledge bit to indicate that it has received and understood the data. The master then sends the data or address information, followed by an acknowledge bit.

Once the master has initiated a write operation, it can send up to 256 data bytes. Each data byte is followed by an acknowledge bit from the 24LC256T-I/MS. Once the full page has been sent, the 24LC256T-I/MS does an internal write cycle and sends an acknowledge bit to the master to signal that the write cycle is complete. During a read operation, the master sends data to the 24LC256T-I/MS, which then responds with a data byte as long as the master maintains an acknowledge signal.

The 24LC256T-I/MS has an automatic write protect feature that is triggered by sending a write without an acknowledge signal within 10 ms. This ensures that data is not inadvertently overwritten or corrupted.
