The 252PMLFT (precision micropower low frequency tolie) is a low power, high precision digital clock generator and frequency synthesizer. It is used to time and synchronize digital and analog electronics for applications such as Ethernet, cellular base stations and personal communications systems.
The 252PMLFT uses a Phase Lock Loop (PLL) architecture to lock an input clock signal to a highly precise reference clock signal. The output of the PLL is then used to clock multiple synchronised subsystems. This eliminates the need for separate oscillators and reduces power consumption as the overall system retains a single clock source while still achieving the desired clock synchronisation.
The 252PMLFT has two operating modes: free-running and controlled. In free running mode, the internal frequency is set to a fixed frequency determined by the user. The internal frequency remains constant, regardless of the reference frequency. In controlled mode, the internal frequency follows the reference frequency, enabling the user to rapidly change the system clock without having to manually adjust the internal frequency.
The 252PMLFT uses a phase-frequency detector to compare phase and frequency between the reference clock and the output of the loop filter. If the detector finds a difference, it will adjust the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and loop filter parameters to match the reference. This process is repeated continuously to ensure the output frequency and phase remain consistent, providing a highly accurate and low jitter clock signal.
The 252PMLFT provides a high degree of flexibility as it is programmable in a wide range of frequencies, from 1 kHz to 200 MHz. The output waveforms are highly stable and provide excellent noise immunity due to their low jitter and low phase noise characteristics. The device has a wide operating temperature range, from -40°C to 85°C, making it suitable for demanding and extreme environments.
Additionally, the 252PMLFT features an internal temperature compensation system that continuously monitors the device temperature and adjusts the output frequency to maintain accuracy across the operating range. This ensures that the frequency stability is not affected by external temperature fluctuations.
