The 25LB15-Q encoder uses the principle of quadrature encoding to convert the rotaryers into electrical signals. It consists of two detectors, which are aligned at 90° intervals. Each detector consists of optical elements that detect the passage of an opaque or reflective marking on a rotating disc. This is the encoder disk, which may also be called the codewheel. As the disk rotates, the detectors produce pulses. The two detectors also produce complementary signals, with each signal being out of phase with the other by 90°. This ensures that the encoder produces accurate electrical signals that can be used to measure incremental or angular rotation.

The 25LB15-Q encoder uses a combination of open-collector outputs and push-pull outputs to send the electrical signals to the receiving device. The two detectors provide the device with two sets of quadrature (A-phase and B-phase) pulses, as well as a direction signal (CW or CCW). The A and B channels are balanced such that the sum of A and B pulses in one revolution will always equal a specified number (e.g. 4000 pulses per revolution). The device will then use this data to accurately measure incremental or angular rotation.
