Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), also referred to as programmable controllers, are utilized for controlling equipment and processes in many industrial and manufacturing settings. PLCs are micro-based computers that first appeared in the late 1960s and originally replaced what would have been a system of relays, timers, and other stand-alone devices. With the advent of the PC based programmable logic controller came the ability to cost-effectively solve more complex control tasks.
PLC Application Field
Typically, PLCs are used in industrial machines and/or processes that could benefit from flexibility in addressing frequent changes or alterations to the task list. This could include production lines used for manufacturing where the product or process undergoing the changes require resetting and/or resetting of the microchip that ties the programmable logic controller to the machine or process. PLC Working Principle

At their core, PLCs receive inputs in the form of electrical signals, process them through their logic program, and then output the corresponding commands to turn on and off electrical circuits. This is the basic operating principle of all PLCs — to read inputs, analyse their data, and make decisions based on those readings to turn electrical circuits on and off.
