Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)
Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT), also known as spark gaps, are special form of insulation devices used to protect electrical and electronic equipment from damage due to overvoltage. They are composed of two or more electrodes which are spaced a certain distance apart and are normally open, meaning no current flows between them. When Vh or more (also called the hold over voltage (Hz)), the device shorts and molecules between the two electrodes ionize, producing a spark which creates a low-resistance path for the current to flow between the electrodes, allowing current to flow through the device until the voltage is sufficiently reduced. It is essentially a solid-state version of the well-known lightning arrester and is used to protect transformers, motors, and the like, from spikes in voltage that might be generated by lightning, electrical storms, or surges on the power line.In most types of GDTs the electrodes are held at a certainDistance apart under normal conditions. When an overwhelming surge of electrical current passes through the tubes, the electrodes are forced together raising the current to a value which ionizes the air gap between them, creating a spark that eliminates the gap and allowing for the passage of current without destroying the electrodes.To ensure efficiency, the distance between the electrodes must be held at the specified level, and special mechanisms are used to ensure proper operation. A thin metal foil can be used to maintain the spacing, or a series of springs or heated wax can be applied for more consistent performance.The proper functioning of a GDT arrester requires a special circuit arrangement, usually involving a resistor. The resistor is usually connected in series with the arrester. This forms the voltage divider. When the voltage level exceeds the threshold voltage of the arrester, a spark is generated between the electrodes, and the current is diverted through the resistor to the ground.The arrester’s voltage level is determined by the spacing between the electrodes and the resistor’s value. As the voltage increases, the current flow increases until it reaches the predetermined value and creates a spark which eliminates the gap, allowing current to flow freely until the voltage is lowered.GDT arresters can be used in a variety of applications, including network equipment, industrial circuits, automation systems, and aviation systems. They can also be used in repeater stations, mobile radio and PDAs, as well as in lightning protection systems.Gas Discharge Tube Arresters are invaluable tools in protecting expensive electronics from power surges, lightning strike, and other electrical events. They are also used to protect motors, transformers, power supplies, and other equipment from damaging voltage spikes.
