Gas discharge tube arresters (GDT) are an effective method of protecting electrical and electronic equipment and components from the effects of electrical surges, electrostatic discharges, and other damaging phenomena associated with electrical power fluctuations. GDTs are the most reliable and cost-effective forms of lightning and other surge protection available, particularly for applications that involve the transmission or storage of data.
A GDT, also known as a spark gap arrestor, is a device that is used to protect electrical equipment from voltage surges and discrepancies. This type of arrester consists of two electrodes that are encased in a gas-filled tube. The electrodes are separated by a preset distance, which is determined by the voltage rating of the arrester. When an abnormally high voltage is encountered, the arc discharge between the electrodes releases energy, quickly reducing the voltage of the surge to a safe level. As the voltage is reduced, the arc bypasses further rise in the voltage, thus limiting the attack of the surge.
Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) have a wide range of applications, most of which involve the protection of sensitive electronic equipment. This conductive field then creates a spark across the electrodes, dissipating the surge energy and reducing its voltage. Over time, the gas will recombine and the arrester will be ready for use again.
Gas Discharge Tube Arresters can be made in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. The primary differences between the various types are the voltage ratings, power handling capabilities, and gas fill types. Depending on the application, they may also contain multiple tubes, be housed in a shell, have a 1-2-3 stage design, have a temperature compensation unit, or be remotely monitored.
GDTs provide a very effective means of protecting highly sensitive electronic and electrical equipment against voltage surges, electrostatic discharges, and other external forces. They can be used in a wide range of applications, from PCs and network components to military aircraft and satellites. However, GDTs do require routine maintenance, as the gas within the tubes needs to be replaced periodically.
