Solid State Relays
A solid state relay (SSR) is an electronic switching device that switches on or off when a small external voltage is applied across its terminals. The SSR uses a semiconductor as a switching element and can be used to switch low-level electrical signals up to very high voltage and current levels. SSRs are used in myriad applications, ranging from simple safety switches to complex power control systems.
Applications
Solid state relays are used for a variety of applications in both industrial and consumer products. In industrial applications, they are used for controlling power supplies, motor speed and direction control, temperature control and process control such as controlling valves and pumps. They are also used in consumer products for controlling the power supply, temperature control or as safety switches in household appliances.
Some of the most common applications for solid state relays include:
- Switching loads such as HVAC, lighting, water pumps, cook-tops, and industrial processes
- Switching between alternative power sources such as a power generator and the public grid
- Controlling power supply for portable devices such as laptops, LED lamps, and cell phones
- Controlling pumps and valves for safety systems and process control
Working Principle
The working principle of the solid state relay is based on the ability of a semiconductor material to switch its conductivity from low resistance in one direction to high resistance in the reverse direction when a small voltage is applied. SSRs use either a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) or a field effect transistor (FET) as a switching element. When a small voltage is applied across the terminals of the SSR, it switches from one state to the other, thus controlling the load it is connected to.
BJT-based SSRs use a transistor as a switching element, which is capable of controlling up to about 20 amps. FET-basrd SSR use a special type of FET called an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) as the switching element, which is capable of controlling up to about 200 amps.
In both cases, the voltage applied across the terminal is small (typically 5V or less), and the current is controlled by controlling the voltage. This means that the SSR can be used to switch very low voltage and current levels, up to very high levels.
Solid state relays are incredibly reliable devices and have many advantages over mechanical relays, including the absence of physical contact and the ability to switch very quickly. This makes them ideal for a wide variety of applications.
