Power Relays, Over 2 Amps

Power relays are electromechanical switches used to control higher voltage and/or higher current applications than can be direct controlled by a microcontroller or other low power electronics. A large variety of relays exist with a wide range of applications. Common relays used in modern electronics often have a voltage of 5 volts or lower and an amperage of 2 amps or lower, but relays made for more specific and higher power uses are also available. This article will focus on relays designed to operate on currents of more than 2 Amps and the various applications in which they are routinely employed. The most basic type of power relay is the coil-activated relay. This style of relay is composed of an electromagnetic coil wound inside a metal case and connected to an electrical system. When electricity is applied to the coil, a magnetic field is created which causes a moveable armature inside the case to be attracted on the opposite side of the case. This moveable armature is mechanically connected to a set of switch-contacts inside the case, and will open or close the switch depending on the polarity of the coil. The switch contact can then be used to control the electricity supply of external devices. Another style of power relay is a solid state relay, which uses a power semiconductor instead of a coil to activate the switch contact. When current is applied to the semiconductor, it will turn on, causing a moveable armature inside the case to be attracted on the opposite side of the case, just like with coil-activated relays. This armature is then connected to a set of switch contacts inside the case, so when the armature moves, it will close or open the switch contacts, depending on the polarity of the applied current. Solid state relays are more reliable than their coil-activated counterparts, since they have no moving parts and are less likely to wear down over time. Power relays are found in a variety of industrial applications, such as machinery, heating and cooling systems, and motor control systems. They are also used in large-scale telecommunications systems, computer networking systems, and power management systems. In addition, they can be used to control and manage large-scale electrical power systems, such as those found in power plants and substations. Power relays can also be found in household appliances, such as washing machines and air conditioners. In these applications, they are used to control the flow of power from the appliance\'s power supply to the appliance\'s motor or compressor.
