Contactors (Solid State)
Solid-state contactors provide a reliable and efficient way to control electric circuits. True to their name, these contactors act as a contact between two surfaces, often circuit boards, allowing electrical current to flow through. They can be used to switch on and off machinery and lighting circuits, control motors and regulate power supplies.
The basic concept of a contactor is the ability to open and close a circuit allowing for continuous operation of the machinery. Contactors are commonly used in industrial settings as they provide a cost effective and reliable way to control electrical circuits and machinery that can operate at a variety of temperatures. They are relatively simple in design and can be used for a variety of different applications such as switching circuit breakers, controlling motors, and regulating power supplies.
The most common type of contactor is the Solid-State Contactor. This type of contactor is made from a single unit containing semiconductor components that form a switch. When activated, theses semiconductor components conduct electricity, thus forming an electrical circuit. During the activation process, the control circuit can be opened and closed via a variety of methods, such as a PLC or manual switch. Each contactor has three terminals in which power is supplied through the line terminal, and then the load is connected to either the normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contact terminal.
The advantages of these contactors lies in their ability to switch on and off rapidly while applying a limited amount of energy. This reduces stress on the system they are controlling and provide a much longer lifespan than conventional contactors. In addition, Solid-State contactors also have the ability to regulate electricity, allowing for pulsed or continuous control of a circuit. Because of this regulation, they can also be used to save energy by reducing the amount of power consumed while in operation.
The work principle of Solid-State contactors rely on the use of these semiconductors or an electrically operated mechanical switch to open and close the contactor. When the switch is closed, i.e., powered on, it allows electricity to pass through the contactor, thus providing the user with a certain amount of current. On the other hand, when the switch is open, i.e., it is powered off, then electricity is unable to pass through the contactor. This makes them ideal for applications where the flow of electricity needs to be controlled.
Solid-State contactors are becoming increasingly more common in industrial settings for the reasons described above. They offer a low cost and reliable form of switching that is highly adaptable and is usually able to control a variety of applications, from simple lighting control to industrial motor control. They also have the benefit of being smaller in size and more energy efficient than traditional contactors, allowing for more efficient machine operation.
