Solid State Relays
Introduction
A solid state relay, or SSR, is an electronic device that acts as an electrically-operated switch, allowing voltage to pass through a circuit when activated. Working Principle
The working principle of a solid state relay is based on the properties of semiconductor materials. It works by using the variable resistance of semiconductor materials to regulate the current flowing through the electrical circuit. When the semiconductor material is activated, its resistance drops, and the voltage level increases, allowing voltage to pass through the circuit. When the semiconductor material is deactivated, its resistance rises again, and the voltage level is lowered, blocking voltage from passing through the circuit.
Solid state relays mainly include three components: the power switch, the protection diode, and the voltage regulator.
First, the power switch uses a semiconductor material as a current regulator. This allows the semiconductor material to resist the passage of current until it is activated.
Second, the protection diode is a semiconductor diode that is used to protect the power switch from voltage overload surges. When an overload occurs, the diode will allow the extra voltage to be diverted away from the power switch, protecting it from damage.
Finally, the voltage regulator is used to regulate the voltage level that is passed through the power switch. This is important to ensure that the voltage passing through the power switch is correct, and that it does not exceed the maximum voltage level that the power switch is rated for.
