Power Relays, Over 2 Amps, 2981567 Application Field and Working Principle
Power relays are electrical switching devices that can be used to control the flow of electricity within a system. They are able to deal with voltages of from 10s to 100s of volts, currents from 2 to over 100 Amps and switching times/speeds ranging from 10s of µs to 10s of ms. Their ability to control the flow of electricity makes them very useful in many applications.
Application Field
Power relays are widely used in the electronic control systems and automobile industry. Examples of electronic control systems in which they are used include anti-skid braking systems, electric power steering systems, electronic fuel injection systems and transmission control modules. In the automobile industry, they are used for applications such as car door locks, car alarms, side-view mirrors, window motors and HVAC systems.
Working Principle
The basic working principle of power relays is based on electromagnetic induction. An electromagnet is used to actuate a metal armature, which in turn mechanically switches on or off the load. Depending on the type of relay used, the electromagnet is either directly or indirectly powered. Directly powered relays are typically used when the switching application requires low current switching, whereas indirectly powered relays are utilized in higher current applications.
Indirectly powered relays require an external power source, such as a voltage spike, to switch the load. The electromagnet is then wired to the external power source. When the voltage spike reaches the electromagnet, the magnetic field created by the electromagnet will cause the metal armature to move and switch on or off the load. Directly powered relays, on the other hand, require the electromagnetic coils to be energized with a constant current. In this arrangement, the metal armature and associated switch contacts will remain in either the open or closed position until the current to the electromagnet is changed.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Power Relays
The primary advantage of power relays as compared to other types of switching devices is their relatively small size, allowing them to be easily integrated into electronic control systems. Additionally, they are relatively inexpensive, which eliminates the need for expensive specialized switching hardware. Although they are relatively simple to use, power relays do have some drawbacks. For example, their mechanism of operation relies on the electromagnet to actuate the metal armature, which means that they require a constant current to operate. This can be inefficient, as significant energy may be wasted in order to keep the electromagnet energized.
Conclusion
Power relays can be used to switch loads up to over 100 Amps, and are commonly found in the electronic control systems and automobile industry. Their primary advantage is their small size, which allows them to be easily integrated into electronic systems. On the downside, power relays require a constant current in order to keep their electromagnets energized, which can be inefficient. Nevertheless, they offer a relatively inexpensive and effective solution for many switching applications.
