Circuit Breakers are safety devices regulating the flow of electrical current in an electrical circuit from ever reaching a damaging level. Circuit Breakers, commonly referred to as CBs, are divided into two categories, which are:
- Thermal Breakers – These are CBs that respond to the temperature of the current.
- Magnetic Breakers – These are CBs that respond to the mechanical force of the current.
2D4UL Application Field and Working Principle
2D4UL stands for two-wire dual four-pole unswitchable circuit breaker. It is a magnetic circuit breaker, and an example of two-pole switching types that can be used in industrial and commercial applications, including primary and secondary distribution circuits and emergency power systems. Its application fields include power plants, petrochemical plants, steel plants, automotive factories, and high-rise buildings.
The 2D4UL consists of two four-pole circuit breakers connected in-line with each other to provide eight poles of interruption. This type of circuit breaker is usually used for three-phase systems, and it has a relatively high interrupting capacity for short-circuit current. This type of circuit breaker continues to provide reliable service for high levels of short-circuit current.
The operating principle of the 2D4UL circuit breaker is based on electromagnetic induction from current flowing through an electromagnet. An electromagnet works on the principle of generating a magnetic field when an electrical current passes through it. The electromagnetic field generated by the current creates an opposing magnetic field to the permanent magnet, which moves an iron core plunger and opens up the contacts, thus interrupting the current.
This process is reversed when the power is cut and the core plunger moves back and re-closes the contacts. When the current passes through the device, the contacts close and prevent any further current flow. To reset the breaker, a manual reset button on the device needs to be pressed after the circuit has reached its reset point.
The 2D4UL circuit breaker is a reliable and cost-effective solution for protecting electrical circuits from overcurrent and short-circuit currents. It is designed to ensure that any abnormal current is quickly detected and interrupted in order to avoid any risks or damages, thereby providing a safe environment for both property and personnel.
