The electromagnetic field generated by the current creates an opposing magnetic field to the permanent magnet, which moves an iron core plunger and opens up the contacts, thus interrupting the current.

This process is reversed when the power is cut and the core plunger moves back and re-closes the contacts. When the current passes through the device, the contacts close and prevent any further current flow. To reset the breaker, a manual reset button on the device needs to be pressed after the circuit has reached its reset point.
