Application Fields

Working Principle

The amount of voltage drop (called the Zener voltage) varies according to the chosen diode and is typically between 2 and 5 volts, although custom versions can often be designed for specific needs. Often, this type of diode is used with a resistor in order to control the Zener current.

When the input voltage exceeds the Zener voltage of the diode, current will flow in the reverse direction and the voltage on the output terminals will be equal to the Zener voltage. This property makes the diode highly suitable for voltage-regulation, transient and surge protection and EMI reduction.

In the case of over-voltage and over-current, the diode will start to conduct dynamically and the voltage on the output terminals will increase exponentially until current-limiting and self-protection take place. This makes it a very good choice for over-voltage and over-current protection.
