The diode bridge rectifiers are a type of device which is used to switch the electric currents in either direction through its two output terminals, depending upon the type of input current. The name of the device comes from its physical structure and layout, which consists of four diodes which are arranged in a bridge pattern. It\'s also called a bridge rectifier, full-wave bridge or center tapped bridge rectifier. The two main applications of a bridge rectifier are to provide a unidirectional voltage source and to provide a rectified current source.
A bridge rectifier is comprised of an ac source, four diodes, and a load. The diodes are arranged in such a way that the output voltage has only one polarity. The ac source supplies the current to the diode bridge rectifier, and the load provides the electric current output from the four diodes. Depending on the type of ac source, the diodes may be connected in a full-wave bridge configuration or a center tapped bridge configuration. In a full wave bridge configuration, the current is applied in both directions, (+ to - and - to +), while in the center tapped bridge the current is applied in only one direction.
When a full-wave bridge configuration is connected to an ac input source, the output of the diode bridge rectifier is DC voltage which is continuously varying, but with only one polarity. The peak output voltage and current of the bridge rectifier will depend upon the of the ac source which is feeding it and the DC load which is connected it to. As the load on the bridge rectifier increases, so will the voltage and current output. This makes bridge rectifiers well suited for applications like power supplies and rectified current sources, where the load is constantly changing and the voltage and current output needs to follow.
In addition to voltage and current, the bridge rectifier also allows for a quick switch between the two outputs, which can be done by simply reversing the polarity of the ac source. This allows for the bridge rectifier to operate in either a forward or reverse-biased mode, depending on the direction of the input current. This makes the bridge rectifier a versatile component which is used in a variety of electronic applications.
When used as a voltage source, the bridge rectifier will provide a continuously varying DC voltage which is suitable for powering DC motors and other analog electronics. When used as a rectified current source, the bridge rectifier will provide a much lower, more constant, current which is ideal for use in digital electronics. This makes it a highly versatile component and a common part of any electronics toolkit.
