The 2N1700 is a NPN type small signal amplifier whose applications are mainly centered around audio amplification, switching, buffer applications and other tasks as directed by the designer. It is a reliable, easy-to-use, cost effective solution for many application areas.

The 2N1700 operates through two distinct areas, the input section and the output section. The input section of the 2N1700 consists of three terminals (Emitter, Collector and Base). As current flows through the collector to the emitter it produces a voltage drop across the Resistor Rb (the input resistance), this in turn provides the necessary amplification. By selectiveing the value of the resistor Rb, the amount of current being drawn can be varied to control the gain of the amplifier. In addition the Bias Voltage is important to ensure the proper balance of voltage at the junction of the emitter and the collector.

In the output section, the addition of a load (RL) will vary the output of the 2N1700 based on the rule that the voltage gain is equal to the quotient of the output impedance divided by the input impedance. By adjusting the resistor values in the output section, additional features can be achieved from the 2N1700, such as Pre-emphasis, negative feedback and voltage gain.
