Working Principle

Generally this trimmer potentiometer is composed of resistive element, sliding contact, casing, and terminal pins. The operation happens between two contacts or wipers that are mechanically or electrically connected by a three-terminal, multi-turn rotary potentiometer of a given rotation angle. When turning the shaft, the contact applies a greater or a lesser resistance on either extreme of the resistive element, which in turn causes a variation in the output voltage.

The resistance is generally adjusted by the turning knob attached to the pot, and the voltage varies accordingly along the range of resistance. It is a three terminal device, thus the cleanest and the most accurate way to ground the unit. The first two pins are used for input and output purpose while the third is used to connect the galvanic ground.
