The field of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) - Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets is a field of study that has become increasingly important in modern electronic applications. RFI and EMI – Contacts work by establishing, maintaining, and reinforcing the conductive shielding around components that are vulnerable to electromagnetic interference. Contacts act as the “gatekeeper”, keeping signals out that could become harmful interference. This is especially important for high-frequency applications, such as wireless communications systems and sensitive medical equipment. Contacts can be made from materials such as copper jumper leads, brass contacts, and a variety of different alloys, depending on the application.
Fingerstock is a type of shielding material that is also used to provide effective EMI and RFI shielding. Fingerstock material is composed of multiple layers of a flexible metallic material, typically composed of copper or aluminum. The layers of the material are tuned to specific frequency ranges to block particular frequencies of EMI or RFI. This material is often used in military and security applications, due to its superior ability to block high-powered signals and prevent interception.
Gaskets are another effective type of shielding material that is used to block or absorb EMI and RFI signals. Gaskets are composed of a variety of materials, such as aluminum, elastomeric, or graphite, that are designed to seal or block unwanted interference. Gaskets can be designed to fit individual components, creating an airtight shielding that will further prevent interception or leakage. Gaskets are especially important for shielding components such as antennas, as they are typically exposed to more interference.
The use of RFI and EMI – Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets can greatly enhance the performance of electronic systems, and ensure that sensitive components remain operable in the most challenging environments.
