This means that the diode is in an off state and will not conduct until a high enough voltage is applied across the diode. When a large enough voltage is applied between the anode and the cathode, the electric field across the short PN junction causes a partial discharge. This partial discharge releases charge carriers which add to existing carriers already present in the junction, leading to an avalanche breakdown. This increases the current gap for conduction and the diode becomes ‘on’. As soon as the voltage reduces below a certain point, the avalanche breakdown is not sustained and the diode is turned ‘off’.In Telecom/DSL/cable modem applications the 30KPA84CA performs its protective function by clamping the fast transients generated by EFT or ESD strikes to a safe level. This prevents damage to the circuit and hence maximises the reliability and performance of the system as a whole.The 30KPA84CA is also tested and approved by third parties, to ensure complete safety, reliability and performance of the device.
