Terminal Blocks - Headers, Plugs and Sockets

A terminal block is a connector that allows for the electrical connection of multiple wires in an industrial setting. This connector helps to provide a secure, robust connection for electrical signals, and make maintenance and repair easy. There are three main types of terminal blocks – headers, plugs and sockets – each with their specific design and application.

Headers

Headers are the most commonly used style of terminal blocks, and often used when permanent wiring is required. This type of terminal block consists of a square or rectangular shaped electrical connection to the circuit board that serves as the contact point for the wires. The wires are then connected to screws or bolts on the header base. Headers are often used in applications such as lighting, HVAC, and large motors.

Plugs and Sockets

Terminal blocks that comprise of plugs and sockets are used in applications where frequent repair or maintenance is required. The plug portion of the terminal block is typically stationary and securely attached to the circuit board, while the socket portion can be released when it needs to be remade. This type of terminal block is also often used in applications that involve switching, such as electronics and automation.

Working Principle

The basis of a terminal block is to provide an electrical connection between multiple wires. The components featured on a terminal block, such as headers, plugs and sockets, act as contact points for the wires, and provide the secure connection. The connection is both mechanical and electrical, meaning that the wires are mechanically attached to the terminal block, and the electrical current is conducted through a copper, silver or gold contact as well as through insulation if it is required. All electrical components within a circuit board are connected through the terminal block, and the current is conducted from one component to another.

Applications

Terminal blocks are used in many industrial applications such as factory automation, building automation, robotics, switchgear, elevators, HVAC, lighting, and machine assembly. They are also widely used in consumer electronics, from home audio systems to personal computer towers. Terminal blocks can be used for AC and DC as well as for larger alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) applications.
