Snap Action, Limit Switches

The 3172CX2 is a snap action limit switch, often used in construction or machine sites to monitor position, limit or regulate object movement, and other automation-related applications. The position of the actuator determines the mode of action, either open or closed. When the actuator is pushed closed, the 3172CX2 activates a mechanism of electrical contacts, which initiates a response directly related to the operation.

The 3172CX2 is a general purpose switch with an electrical rating of 120-6A 120VAC and 120-6A 120V DC. Operating temperature range is from 0 to 60°C with UL and CSA environmental ratings of 500 Volts. The 3172CX2’s mechanical properties include offset pivoting actuator, zinc die cast housing, and housing made of stainless steel or hardened plastic. The electrical termination is provided by two integrated 7mm ribbon cable connectors on the switch.

The 3172CX2 snap-action switch is actuated by an offset pivoting lever that is pressed against either an open or closed electrical contact on the switch. When the actuator is opened or closed, the snap-action contact arm moves against an internal spring, throwing the contacts open or closed. The arm then snaps back after being released, resulting in an audible snapping sound signifying precise switch action has been achieved.
