36.054, also known as the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) encoding standard, is a commonly used signal compression algorithm for digital images. The aim of the algorithm is to reduce the amount of data used to represent an image whilst preserving the quality as much as possible. This algorithm works by taking advantage of the fact that the human eye perceives some parts of the image more distinctly than other parts. To best explain the working principle behind the JPEG algorithm, it is necessary to look at the application field of JPEG.
While JPEG originally is tuned to use on digital camera pictures in 8-bit format, its application field today is much wider. This algorithm applies most commonly to image formats such as JPG, JPEG, and EMF. Additionally, the algorithm can be used in the storage of digital video and audio. In video formats, such as MOV, MPEG, and 3GP, the JPEG algorithm is used to reduce the size of the files, thus allowing for them to be stored more immediately.
To understand the working principle of the JPEG algorithm, it is important to look at how the algorithm processes the data. The JPEG algorithm works by applying a series of encoding techniques to the input signal. It uses a combination of perceptual and transform coding techniques to reduce the amount of data required to represent the original signal. The key to its success is the transform coding techniques which are used to reduce the data rate and improve its fidelity.
At its core, the transform coding techniques used by the JPEG algorithm are able to break down the input signal into a series of frequencies. These frequencies represent the distinct regions of the input signal. By separating out these distinct regions, there is a reduced amount of data which needs to be stored and transmitted. This is done through the use of discrete cosine transform coding which efficiently compresses the data. Additionally, the JPEG algorithm also uses a series of techniques known as quantization to further reduce the amount of data.
In addition to these compression techniques, the JPEG algorithm also utilises a number of decompression techniques. These techniques allow for the recovered data to be reassembled in its original form. This is done through the use of inverse transform coding and the application of entropy coding techniques. The former technique reconstructs the original signal by reversing the effects of the transform coding technique. The latter technique reconstructs the original data based on the entropy coding techniques which are applied to the output after it has been decompressed.
Overall, the JPEG algorithm is an extremely successful signal compression technique. Through its application in a range of digital formats, it has greatly reduced the amount of data which needs to be stored and transmitted. The key to its success lies in its combination of perceptual and transform coding techniques which allow for the reduction of redundant data and an improvement in the quality of the visual information which is conveyed. The ability to effectively compress and decompress data has allowed for the development of more efficient and smaller data formats. In this way, the JPEG algorithm has had a major impact on how digital images, videos, and audio are stored today.
