Incandescent lamps
The most basic example of an incandescent lamp is the common light bulb used in home lighting. It works by heating a filament inside a glass bulb that is filled with inert gas. The heat from the filament creates light and also heats the gas itself. This gas has a very low thermal conductivity, which means that it takes a considerable amount of time for the filament to heat up before the bulb produces light, hence the slow startup time of most light bulbs. The filament in an incandescent lamp is made from a wire that is capable of withstanding very high temperatures, such as tungsten or molybdenum. The filament is enclosed within a glass bulb which sits within a metal or ceramic base. Inside the bulb there is a vacuum, or an inert gas, such as argon, which can prevent depletion of the filament.
The light generated by an incandescent lamp is generally a white light due to the fact that the filament is heated to temperatures of around 4000 degrees Celsius. Depending on the type of filament used and the temperature at which it is heated, the light produced by an incandescent lamp can vary from a dull yellow-orange light to an intense white-blue light. Despite being one of the most common types of lighting, incandescent lamps are relatively inefficient when compared to other types of lighting such as LED and fluorescent lighting. This is because most of the energy used in the lamp is converted into heat rather than light.
Neon lamps
Neon lamps are a type of gas discharge lighting which are commonly used for decorative purposes. They are well known for their bright colors and the distinctive humming noise they emit when in operation. Neon lamps are filled with a rarefied mixture of different gases, such as neon, argon, xenon, and krypton. An electric current is passed through the gas, which causes the electrons in the atoms of the gas to be excited and jump up to higher energy levels. When the electrons jump back down to their original energy levels they release a photon of light. This is known as electroluminescence.
Neon lamps come in a variety of colors and sizes and can be used for a variety of purposes. They are commonly used in signs and displays and in the theater industry where they are used in stage lighting. They are also used in medical imaging and to test for electrical currents and arcs. The intensity of the light produced by a neon lamp can be varied by adjusting the voltage and current applied to it.
Application field and working principle
Incandescent lamps and neon lamps have many applications in both the home and commercial industries. Incandescent lamps are most commonly used in homes for general lighting purposes, while neon lamps are usually used to create decorative lighting effects. Both types of lamps are used in commercial settings as well. Incandescent lamps are commonly used for security lighting, while neon lamps are commonly used for display and advertising purposes.
The working principle for both types of lamps is the same – a filament is heated by an electric current, causing it to emit light. In the case of neon lamps, a mixture of gases is used instead of a filament, and the light is produced by exciting the electrons in the atoms of the gas. Incandescent lamps are more efficient at producing light than neon lamps, but neon lamps have the advantage of producing a greater variety of colors.
