Lamps come in a variety of different shapes, sizes and appearances, with the most common types of lamps being incandescent, fluorescent and neon. While each type of lamp has its own unique working principles, they are all based on the same three-hundred and seventy-six (376) application field – or principle – which involves the generation, conversion and transfer of energy.

Incandescent Lamps

Incandescent lamps are the most basic type of lamp and utilizes an incandescent source to generate a glow. This type of lamp works by sending an electric current through the filament, which causes it to become heated and illuminate. The filament is usually made from tungsten because it has a higher melting point and is able to withstand the high temperatures. The current used to heat the filament is typically DC current, although AC current can be used as well.

Neon Lamps

Neon lamps are a form of illumination that works by passing an electric current through a gas-filled tube. This gas is usually neon, although the name of the lamp could refer to a variety of different gases that glow when electricity is passed through them. When a current is sent through the tube the material inside the tube is ionized, and this causes a glow to be generated. Like incandescent lamps, neon lamps usually use an AC or DC current to generate the light.

Application Field and Working Principles of Lamps

The three-hundred and seventy-six (376) application field and working principle of lamps is the same no matter what type of lamp is utilized. The power supply used on all lamps is either direct or alternating current. This current is then passed through a filament or gas, respectively, and is ionized and heated up to a certain temperature which then results in the generation of light. In the case of incandescent lamps, the electric current is passed through a tungsten filament which generates heat, while in the case of neon lamps the gas inside the tube is what is ionized and then generates the light.
