Diodes are semiconductor devices that allow electrical current to travel in only one direction. Zener diodes, also known as voltage-regulated or avalanche diodes, are a special class of diodes that are designed to operate in reverse-bias mode. More specifically, they are diodes that have been engineered to regulate the voltage across them to a specific level, even when larger voltages are applied.

The 3EZ20DE3/TR8 is a 1/4 Watt low-profile surface mount Zener diode from Diodes Incorporated. This diode offers up to 20 volts of Zener Voltage and up to 5.6 volts of reverse current leakage. It has an ultra small package size of 0.8mm x 0.8mm x 0.6mm, making it ideal for use in high-density packaging applications where space is at a premium. The diode also has an operating temperature range of -55°C to 125°C, making it well suited for use in a wide range of applications.

Application Field

The 3EZ20DE3/TR8 diode is well suited for high-density surface mounting applications, such as in consumer electronics, telecommunication equipment, and numerous other applications. It can be used to protect sensitive components and circuits from voltage overshoot, and can also be used in voltage regulation circuits or as a voltage reference in various types of circuit designs.

Working Principle

When a forward voltage is applied to the 3EZ20DE3/TR8 Zener diode, the current that flows is limited by the internal mechanical junction resistance. When the voltage reaches the Zener Voltage of the diode, the current begins to raise rapidly causing an avalanche breakdown of the diode. The voltage across the diode is then held constant at the Zener Voltage, irrespective of the applied voltage.

The reverse current of the diode is determined by the applied voltage. When the voltage is below the Zener voltage, the 3EZ20DE3/TR8 will operate like a normal diode, allowing very little current to flow. When the applied voltage reaches the Zener voltage, the reverse current will increase rapidly, until it reaches the rated leakage current.

As the reverse current increases, so too does the heat dissipated by the diode. To prevent overheating of the diode, it is important to take into account the maximum power dissipation when designing a circuit with the 3EZ20DE3/TR8.
