3EZ5.6D/TR12 is a Zener diode. Like other rectifier diodes, it is made of two electrodes embedded in a semi-conductive material, usually N-Type on the negative electrode and P-Type on the positive electrode. When the Zener diode is reverse biased, due to the thermal generation of the free carriers (electrons and holes) and the avalanching effect, an avalanche breakdown voltage is generated.
