TVS–Diodes, or Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are an important part of any electrical circuit. Application Field and Working Principle

The 3KP85C is best suited for interconnects (IC pins, bus bars, and Cables) which are susceptible to the most common causes of electrical transients like ESD, EFT (electrical fast transients), and surge events due to lightning. When a voltage spike is present, the voltage current of the 3KP85C increases sharply until it reaches its breakdown voltage. Once this is surpassed, the thyristor switches on, effectively reducing the voltage current back to safe levels. When the surge is over, the thyristor automatically switches off, restoring the voltage current to its original level.The 3KP85C also has an important function that other TVS diodes don’t possess: an internal shunt resistor. This helps internalize the heat that is produced during surges and protects against additional firing. It also has a built in snubber, which helps reduce the ringing effect that can occur in the end part of a surge. In addition, the 3KP85C’s low capacitance and ultra-low leakage current make it an ideal solution for protecting sensitive electronic components from repetitive ESD events.
