Working Principle
The working principle of the 4.0SMDJ20A TVS diode is based on the idea of a Zener breakdown. When the voltage level on the anode side of the diode is greater than the voltage on the cathode side, it will separate to create an electron-hole pair. This will lower the voltage on the anode side by means of dissipating the excess energy as heat within the junction, thereby protecting the device from damage. If the voltage level on either side exceeds the maximum peak breakdown voltage, the diode will break down, creating a high-current path.
