Often interchangeable with the term “quartz crystal,” a crystal is a substance whose atoms are arranged in a geometric shape. Most crystals grow from a solution in which the atoms or molecules are precipitated out of the solution as they crystallize. Crystals can range in size from single atoms to large masses of several pounds.

Within the larger angel of electronics and communications, crystals serve a specific and important function. Specifically, they are utilized to create and maintain an oscillation frequency that is necessary for the operation of a circuit. Without a crystal, certain types of electronics will be unable to function properly.

The 416F27022ADT crystal is a precision crystal oscillator with a low-level output and low-profile surface mount design. The 416F27022ADT is used in a variety of applications, including general purpose frequency control in direct digital synthesis (DDS) systems, frequency control of subsystems such as PLLs, frequency control in computer systems, frequency control in medical systems, frequency control in telecommunications systems such as cellular radios, and synchronous channel control in digital communications.

The 416F27022ADT crystal is designed to oscillate at a given frequency (i.e., a frequency determined by its size and shape) and to maintain the oscillation over variations in temperature, voltage, and other conditions. The basic principle of operation is that a quartz crystal is an excellent almost perfectly linear and linear material. An electrical signal is applied to the crystal which causes it to deform slightly, resulting in an alternating change in capacitance, which produces a resonance frequency. This in turn produces an output signal.
