Incandescent Lamps

Principles of Operation

Principles of Operation

The primary principle behind the operation of a neon lamp is that it produces incoherent light due to the rapid oscillations of the gas particles inside the lamp. When a high voltage potential is applied across two electrodes inside the lamp, the gas particles within the tube become excited, emitting photons. As the excited gas particles continue to collide with the lamp’s walls, they are transformed into photons – thus creating the visible light that is emitted from the lamp.
