Incandescent Lamps

An incandescent lamp is a device that produces light when electricity is passed through a properly insulated filament, or wire, that is surrounded by an evacuated glass envelope. The heat produced by the filament is enough to make the glass envelope glow, thus emitting light. This type of lighting source has been around for over 130 years since bulbs were first fielded in the late 1880s.

These bulbs typically contain a tungsten filament that is heated when electricity is applied. When the filament reaches a certain temperature, usually around 1,500 degrees Celsius, it emits light, however the current also has the side effect of heating up the internal atmosphere of the bulb. As the atmosphere heats, the reactions of the elemental gases can produce other colors of light, mostly in ambient colors.

Incandescent bulbs are the oldest form of electrical lighting and are commonly used for residential, commercial and industrial applications due to their low cost. They are commonly used in decorative lighting fixtures for their perceived warmer colors, and in lamps for task lighting.

Neon Lamps

Neon lighting is an electrically operated system in which inert gas is heated to a temperature high enough to create a glow that produces visible light. Neon lamps are typically made up of a pair of electrodes (anode and cathode) placed at either end of a sealed glass tube. The inert gas is filled in the tube and is heated with a high-voltage electric current. This creates an arc of light that eventually results in a visible glow.

The color of the light emitted by a neon lamp depends on the gas that is used to fill the sealed tube. Common parts of the gas, argon, krypton, and mercury vapor, are responsible for the common blues, greens and yellows used in lighting today. Neon lamps can also be used to display numbers, letters or symbols and have been used for signs and advertisements for many years.

Neon lamps are commonly used for lighting purposes due to their ability to emit light in different colors and intensities. They are often used in automotive, home and commercial signs, displays, and projects. The long life expectancy and high brightness of these lamps make them very appealing for lighting projects.
