Pressure Sensors

A pressure sensor is a device which is used to measure pressure, a property of fluids, solids or gases. It is also commonly referred to as a transducer, a pressure transmitter, a pressure gauge, or simply a pressure switch. Pressure sensors measure the pressure of fluids, solids, or gases, and can be used in a wide range of applications including industrial process control, automotive, and home appliances. The most common type of pressure sensing device is a pressure-measuring diaphragm, which consists of a flexible membrane that is attached to a pressure-sensing device, such as a strain gauge, capacitive sensor, or piezoelectric sensor. Pressure sensors also use mechanical elements such as bellows, diaphragms, pistons, and tubes, as well as other components such as pressure transducers, strain gauges, and electronic components.

Transducers

Transducer is a general term used to describe any device or instrument that converts energy from one form to another. In the context of pressure sensing, transducers convert the pressure applied to a fluid or gas into a measurable electrical signal. This signal can then be used to control a process or provide feedback on the pressure applied. Transducers can be air pressure transducers, high-pressure transducers for use in hazardous areas, or low-pressure transducers used in medical applications. Pressure transducers also come in a variety of configurations such as differential pressure transducers, DP transmitters, and pressure sensors with digital outputs. Transducers typically contain components such as diaphragms, strain gauges, capacitive sensors, and piezoelectric sensors.

The 5 PSI-GF-CGRADE-MINI pressure transmitter is a high-accuracy, low-cost instrument designed for applications requiring high accuracy such as process control and machine control. Its design combines an advanced, low-noise precision sensor technology with a proven ASIC signal conditioning module. The transducers use a diaphragm and strain gauge sensor design to detect and measure pressure. The strain gauge is strain-sensitive and mounted on a flexible diaphragm, which is connected to a cup-shaped pressure vessel that contains a pressure-sensitive oil. The diaphragm causes the strain gauge to flex when there is a pressure difference between the two sides of the diaphragm, resulting in a strain and an associated voltage change. The voltage signal is then amplified and measured by a Wheatstone bridge circuit. The transducer’s digital output is a proportional representation of the applied pressure, and can be interfaced with a controller in order to monitor pressure levels.

The 5 PSI-GF-CGRADE-MINI features an all-ceramic construction and a wide-range operation of -40 to +60°C (-40 to +140°F). It is protected against water spray and dust, and is suitable for use in hazardous areas. The gauge factor (GF) of the device is 0.18, and it offers a pressure range of 0 to 5 PSI. It is fully self-contained and powered by a single AA-sized battery.

The device is ideal for applications such as low-pressure measurement of oxygen, fuel, or natural gas, closed chamber monitoring, gas flow measurement, security systems, and fluid and gas flow control systems. It is also suitable for applications such as refrigeration, air conditioning, HVAC, leak detection, and material testing.
