Pin configurable/selectable oscillators are among the most versatile and cost-effective solutions available in the oscillator market. The 512ACA000126AAGR application field and working principle is a prime example of this type of oscillator. The 512ACA000126AAGR is a 6 pin, pin configurable Surface Mount Device (SMD). Its selection is determined by the application of certain pins, and internal software, which corresponds to a specific frequency selection. This allows the device to be programmed to fit the unique requirements of any application.The 512ACA000126AAGR provides the flexibility to program any of the six pins to either ground or power in order to select any one of 16 different frequencies covering the range of 100 kHz to 333 MHz. The pins are arranged in an alternating pattern beginning with power/ground and ending with power/ground as shown in Figure 1. Power is applied to any pin that is to be selected by the oscillator and ground is applied to any pin that is not to be selected.

The 512ACA000126AAGR also provides a choice of a crystal or an external clock signal. In crystal mode, the oscillator is used to generate a signal with a pre-defined frequency and stability. The low power consumption, high stability, and small package size of the 512ACA000126AAGR make it an ideal choice for use in a wide variety of digital and analog design applications.The 512ACA000126AAGR oscillator works by converting an input signal into an output signal of a specific frequency using a combination of a reference frequency, pulse-width modulation (PWM), and digital circuitry. The oscillator begins by using the input signal and reference frequency to set up a series of symmetric square waves, as shown in Figure 2.

These square waves are used as the pulse-width modulation input to the digital circuitry. Depending upon the pins set to power or ground, the digital circuitry is placed in one of 16 different frequency modes. This is done by using specific resistors and capacitors connected to the pins, which are used to select the frequency of the output signal. Once the digital circuitry is in the correct frequency mode, the pulse-width modulation is used to adjust the output signal frequency. The digital circuitry adjusts the pulse-width modulation to achieve the desired frequency. The output is then sent to the output pin of the oscillator, as shown in Figure 3.
