Pin Configurable/Selectable Oscillators (PCSOs) are a type of programmable oscillator that feature an on-chip programmable frequency divider, allowing the user to select a wide range of output frequencies. One of the more widely used PCSOs is the 512FCA000983AAGR oscillator.

This oscillator is composed of two components: a crystal oscillator and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The crystal oscillator is a miniaturized quartz crystal tuned to a fixed frequency, typically between 5 MHz and 100 MHz. The VCO produces an output signal that is a division of the crystal frequency and the divider ratio can be adjusted to generate different frequencies within the tuning range. By passing an external control voltage to the VCO, the output frequency of the oscillator can be varied over a wide range.
