Flat Flexible (FFC) and Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC)Connectors are an invaluable tool used in a variety of applications and are used in applications that require a very slim connection in a particularly tight space. The FFC and FPC Connectors come in a variety of sizes and spacings, allowing it to connect within spaces too tight for traditional cable and wire solutions. These connectors provide a secure connection in a narrow space, and can be easily configured for multiple applications.
The primary purpose of a FFC and FPC Connectors is to provide a secure but flexible connection between two circuits that need to remain separated yet still share data or electrical power. The FFC and FPC Connectors are typically used on boards of circuit-embedded electronics in consumer electronics, automotive and aerospace applications. These types of connectors are best for applications that require a low-profile but flexible connection.
The flat flexible cable (FFC) usually features a small, flat conductive cable with a standardized number of contacts. These connectors are used to transmit both power and signals between two separate circuit boards. A FFC Connector is composed of two parts that interlock with each other. The two parts are flexed together and then secured with contoured screws, self locking clamps, or metal clips. This layers the two metal pieces so that the contacts are lost and the two boards are firmly locked together.
Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) Connectors are similar to FFC Connectors, except they are thin, flexible printed circuits. They have similar characteristics; however, the contacts are made by conductive pathways embedded into the substrate. These types of connectors are commonly found in digital cameras, cellular phones, MP3 players, pagers, and tablet computers. They are primarily used in applications with a small amount of space and/or high levels of motion where traditional cable and wire solutions are not suitable.
Neither FFC nor FPC Connectors are mechanically-structured. That is, they are not designed to receive power, but rather to provide a secure interconnection. The connection is usually achieved through a series of insulated wires or traces, called a flex circuit. A flex circuit uses a variety of techniques to create the electrical connection. Common techniques involve soldering, wire bonding, or pressure welding.
The working principle of FFC and FPC Connectors is relatively simple. Each component consists of two contact boards which are connected by a flat conductor. The two boards are held in place by a contoured screw, self-locking clamp, or metal clip. When the two boards are connected, a strong and stable electrical connection between the two boards is created. This connection is resistant to mechanical vibration and is able to accommodate a wide range of electrical signals.
In recent years, FFC and FPC Connectors have become increasingly popular due to their low cost, high density, and slim design which makes them ideal for use in tight spaces. The connectors are simple and fast to install and can be used for a multitude of applications, making them an invaluable tool for device makers. They are especially useful in applications that require a low profile and high flexibility, such as consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace.
